PM Modi said that BHIM will be the world’s biggest wonder. While launching the app, PM made payment to Khaadi.

Apart from an app the interface can be accessed using USSD from any phone including feature phones. To use this service users need to dial *99# from any kind of mobile phone. It will also not require internet to access this payment interface using USSD.

I fail to understand…” Hota told ET last week. He said that while companies have shown interest, they are still assessing and negotiating commercial terms with banks.

What is BHIM?

BHIM stands for Bharat Interface for Money. It is an app that lets you make quick transactions using UPI. The payments are made directly from bank account to bank account using just mobile number or payment address. The app is actually has been built on top of UPI, that is an instant payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), an RBI-regulated entity. UPI is built over the IMPS infrastructure and allows you to instantly transfer money between any two parties bank accounts.

What do you need to use BHIM?

To use BHIM you need a compatible Android phone or an iPhone. Almost all smartphones launched in last couple of years are compatible, according to the Google Play store where the app is available. Although there is some erroneous communication from the government over the Android support. It says Android above version 8 is required, while Android is still in version 7. But that seems to be some technical issue. India Today Tech has checked and the app is compatible with almost all recent Android phones.

To use BHIM you also need a bank account and working internet connection in your phone.

How do you use BHIM?

To use BHIM, you will have to set up a UPI PIN. This you do by going into the BHIM app’s main menu Then go to Bank Accounts > Set UPI-PIN for the selected account. You will be prompted to enter the last 6 digits of your Debit/ATM card along with the expiry date. Using this data, the app will pre-fetch details of your bank account. You will then receive an OTP which you will enter and set your UPI PIN. The UPI PIN is different from the PIN that you may have on your bank’s app, which also uses UPI. User can download the app from Play Store. The app will be available for iOS users but for now it is not listed on the iOS App Store.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use the app:

1. Android users can download the application from Play Store by searching for ‘BHIM’. The app is not available for iOS users yet.

2. Install the application and choose your language. The app will prompt you to verify your phone number using an SMS. Click on Next and wait for the verification process to be completed.

5. The app displays three options — send, request and scan/pay. Transactions are possible only between verified phone numbers.

6. To send money to someone, type in their phone number and the amount to be transferred. The app will prompt you to input your MPIN, usually a four or a six digit code that authenticates a mobile transaction.

About Bharat Interface For Money Bhim App

Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) is an initiative to enable fast, secure, reliable cashless payments through your mobile phone. BHIM is interoperable with other Unified Payment Interface (UPI) applications, and bank accounts. BHIM is developed by the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI). BHIM is made in India and dedicated to the service of the nation.

Named after the architect of the Indian Constitution, Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) is a simplified payment platform designed to make Unified Payment Interface (UPI) and USSD payment modes simpler and usable across feature phones and smartphones.

Developed by National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI), BHIM is supported by host of banks, including State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, Bank of India, Canara Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank,

Oriental Bank of Commerce and Punjab National Bank, among others.

The app, which can be downloaded from Google Play Store, is currently available in Hindi and English, and support for more languages is expected soon.

The app can be used to make and receive payments and can be used by anyone who has an account with any of the 32 banks that are part of UPI. The app can be used to send money even to users who do not have the app and to accounts in banks that are not on UPI.

Allahabad Bank, Andhra Bank, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Catholic Syrian Bank, Central Bank of India, DCB Bank, Dena Bank, Federal Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, IDBI Bank, IDFC Bank, Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, IndusInd Bank, Karnataka Bank, Karur Vysya Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Punjab National Bank, RBL Bank, South Indian Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, State Bank of India, Syndicate Bank, Union Bank of India, United Bank of India, Vijaya Bank. UPI needed all banks to become interoperable with the UPI technology (between February and June 2016), which is no mean task. NPCI took two extra months to ensure as many banks as possible were on board a compact system.

UPI is how apps like PhonePe — built in less than a year — help make the inter-banking experience as simple as email for customers. It is a living and breathing platform that enables immediate payments. And it was a wake-up call for banks to get their technology act together.

Bharat Interface for Money (or BHIM) is another of UPI’s progeny and applications. The buzz in the tech sphere is that it is the shape of things to come — read, technology and micro-lending.
